I have worked in skincare around the world, including for a brand out of Australia where they have incredibly stringent regulations around formulation and labels, especially around sun protection. SPF in the US is also highly regulated to make sure we're not exposing ourselves to chemicals or misleading claims.
That being said, it still happens, it was only discovered a couple of years ago that some ingredients do indeed build up in the bloodstream, requiring a revamp of what we find acceptable to put on our skin, or our children's skin.
Personally, knowing what I know, I prefer an 'organic' SPF over a chemical one, as in zinc. And I love it if it has ingredients that have synergy around barrier function, and includes antioxidants. I want it to be stable when exposed to sunlight (duh, but wouldn't be saying this if it's not always the case). And really, I tell people the best SPF for them is the one they will reapply throughout the day. With a luxurious feel and subtle clean aroma, I find my clients are more likely to reapply throughout the day (see their recommendation below). It is also rated a 31+ .. some will say only use a 50 SPF, but that usually means chemicals, and often provides a false sense of security leading to a one and done application. I'm also not a nano fan, this damages the world's coral reefs.

Of note, I am a firm believer in getting some Vitamin D, but go out early, avoid baking in the sun, and use SPF regularly on your face, neck, and hands to avoid signs of aging where they show up more often.
