Facial cupping is sometimes called the "Eastern Facelift" for its ability to create a dramatic shift in the appearance of the face and skin, creating lift, smoothing out lines, plumping with hydration. This makes the technique a sought after treatment for those looking for a non-invasive, holistic approach to rejuvenating their appearance. Cupping landed in mainstream media a few years ago thanks to Olympians competing with large circles on their back of varying shades of pink, red and purple. The treatment itself has been part of Chinese Medicine and other cultures for centuries.
The appearance of these marks on the body can make therapeutic facial cupping sound unpleasant, but facial cupping is drastically different than the sometimes mark inducing treatment performed on the body.
Facial cups are small tools that create suction by compressing a flexible portion of the device to push air out with the bell of the cup resting on the surface of the skin. The release action of the soft bulb draws the skin, fatty tissues, lymphatics, muscle and fascia up into the bell with varying degrees of pressure - it feels like a gentle pull, and can be incredibly relaxing as it decompresses the area - creating space for new blood flow and relieving tight muscles. Because the cups are continuously moving, or used in a suction/release movement, no marks are allowed to form on the face area. For the cupping treatments at my clinic, I prepare the skin with a gentle oil cleanse and steam towel. A light botanical oil suited for your skin is applied to ensure smooth cup movement. This also leaves the skin nourished and hydrated. I encourage your lymphatic system to move properly by working to gently open the pathways. Initiating treatment on the face is not highly effective, as lymph works on a vacuum system - it must be open and moving from below the area you hope to affect - you cannot force it downward. Gentle cupping begins on the décolletage and neckline, moving upward to the face.
Benefits of facial cupping include:increased blood flow to the skin, delivering nutrients to the surface, movement of lymphatic fluid to remove waste and stagnation, increased glow, less dull appearance in the skin. Cupping creates a 'lift' in the skin to lessen sagging, contours the face to bring out features and lessen the appearance of sunken areas. helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, decreases puffiness in the eye area, reduces congestion/breakouts with ongoing treatment, encourages hydration to treated areas through improved circulation, relief from TMJ and tight muscles or soreness, and relief from headaches in some cases.
Please note one update: this treatment has been combined with facial guasha to be most comprehensive and adapted as needed for the individual - see Eastern Face Lift under treatments.
